A day to celebrate our identity: the first state, the best state. New South Wales Day. August 25th or where that day is at the weekend, the following Monday.

On the first Monday in June each year, West Australians celebrate the establishment of their state. It's an absolute travesty that we in New South Wales do not share this level of patriotic fervor for our own state.

This petition proposes the establishment of a public holiday to be styled New South Wales Day, to be held on the 25th day of August each year, except where that day should fall on a Saturday or Sunday, in which case it ought then to be held on the following Monday. August 25th is proposed, since it was on that day in 1824 that the Legislative Council of New South Wales first met in Government House.
