Don't cut the Newcastle rail line
This petition had 645 supporters
The Coalition government's proposal to cut current rail and bus services between Wickham and Newcastle stations and replace them with an expensive, slow and unreliable tram will make it even more difficult for public transport users - including students, residents, workers, shoppers, tourists and visitors - to access the city's facilities and services, and will hinder, not help, the city's revitalisation.
It will hurt those least able to afford it, and increase greenhouse gas emissions.
What the government is proposing is also financially irresponsible. The $460million of scarce and valuable public funds that it is planning to waste on this project could be directed to many other projects that would both assist Newcastle's revitalisation and improve the city's public transport system.
Please listen to the community you were elected to serve by scrapping this proposal and redirecting the money to worthwhile projects that would improve, not remove, Newcastle's public transport services.
