Stop Expansion of Tobacco Farms and Cigarette Production in Ethiopia!
This petition had 112 supporters
Ethiopia is one of the world's poorest countries and millions of Ethiopians are affected by HIV, tuberculosis, childhood pneumonias and other infectious diseases. Smoking rates have been low in Ethiopia, but the number of smokers there is rising alarmingly and the World Health Organization predicts a significant increase in smoking prevalence in the coming years. In 2016, the Ethiopian government sold 40% of shares in National Tobacco Enterprise, the country's government-owned tobacco company, for the huge sum of US $500 million to Japan Tobacco International (JTI). The goals of this deal are to expand tobacco farms in Ethiopia and increase cigarette production for sale mainly to Ethiopians. It is a deal that will devastate the health of millions of Ethiopians and might well hinder programs for combating tuberculosis and HIV, diseases which are significantly exacerbated by smoking. The Ethiopian government broke WHO tobacco treaty laws by making this deal, and is harming its own people. Please save Ethiopia from a terrible epidemic of tobacco-related disease by petitioning the managing director of the tobacco company, NTE, and the Ethiopian Prime Minister, to reverse and end this unhealthy and unethical deal.
