Why this petition matters

Started by Sean Kilroy

Music gigs are usually an essential part of of a musicians income, and in general as part of their career, especially early on when they first start. Musicians who are desperate for a gig, at a restaurants, a bar, or another popular place within the town or city sometimes just want to have a gig even though they won't be paid that well or paid at all. This leads to them not being able to maintain a career or job as a musician, despite them putting in all this effort. I picked this topic because music is something that I enjoy very much, and it makes me sad to see that all these people trying to pursue a career in this profession usually have to quit soon after they start due to lack of income. The US, specifically has a major problem with musicians. We love music, but don't understand the value that it should be given. What I propose is this, every gig should be paid fairly no matter the place. For each gig, a certain amount of money should be met for the quality of the gig, if the amount of people going there doesn't amount to the specific amount, the place that they are performing at will pay them the rest. (Lets just say that around 200 people would be about 3,000$ more or less that is split between multiple band members.) Or, a more simple version is to raise the wage of these musicians when they perform their gigs in Massachusetts. This will hopefully reach Governor Baker, if the required amount of people sign it.
