Why this petition matters

Started by D. McL.

Give every vote an equal slice of power for its chosen party.  In every Canadian election, some votes get representation in parliament, but other votes get nothing. Some parties get massively more seats than their share of the votes. Other parties get far fewer seats than their share of the votes. This is increasingly leading to extreme parties “winning” unearned power, total control with just 35% of the votes.  Canadians increasingly are giving up on voting because the system doesn’t work for them. I’m calling for Canada to join other modern democracies in creating Proportional Representation elections NOW — in which every vote wins equal power and representation in the legislature.

This petition calls on the Prime Minister of Canada, JustinTrudeau, to lead the government to reform Canada’s federal election system into a true proportional representation system, such as multi-seat ridings with a single transferable vote ballot, to be implemented prior to the 2023 federal election, to give every vote equal power regardless of party.

Many modern nations have switched from our old colonial election system to Proportional Representation systems that make sure that a party with 39% of the votes gets 39% of the power in parliament / government — not 60% as happens in Canada.

Every Canadian should be able to vote for any party they choose, knowing that their vote will win the same share of power for their party as every other vote earns.  No more split votes. No more votes that get nothing.  Other countries already do this with great success.

The federal Liberal Party and the federal NDP are currently blocking Proportional Election reform, even though the Liberals won the 2015 federal election by promising to reform Elections to empower all voters.  The Liberal Party is instead promoting a deceptive Alternative Vote (AV) or “Ranked Ballot” (with single-member ridings)  which would deny many voters their first choice, potentially diverting everyone’s votes to either the Liberals or the Conservatives in many ridings. This would create essentially a two-party government system like the United States has. Diverse viewpoints would have no voice in government.

Proportional representation election systems, have increased voter participation in countries that have adopted them, as voters learn that their vote will actually earn power.
