Give 16-18yrs old with learning disabilities and families more support and opportunities
My son is 17 with learning disabilities. Im a single mum with very limited resources of support and no family. Im a qualified midwife that had to give up. Why? Lack of support and lack of childcare. Why? 16-18 yrs old with Learning disabilities and families are stuck. Transport from local authorities stop at 16. Unless you have strength to fight and appeal. We fight for our children and teenagers daily. We lose our ability and determination with each battle. Its exhausting. Why does the age category of 16-18 yrs cause such an issue for childrens services transitioning to adult services. My son has rights to be involved and includèd. I and other parents have a right to education/work. I have skills and a degree. I had to leave due to lack of childcare. Lack of PA/carer services. Why? This must be addressed. My son and his peers have a right to a quality of life and so do parent/carers. 16-18 yr olds are hidden away, ignored, deprived, excluded. The 'limbo' state of what category of child or adult scenario do they get labelled as is unacceptable. Enough. Stand up and listen. I researched my own carer for me to return to education to become a nurse. It took me 6 months. Why? Why? Why? I paid out of my own savings. Why is there no support? This must stop. Now.
