As an Italo-Canadian, my childhood revolved around the Italian Football League, specifically, Lega Serie A. Growing up, I would wake up early on Saturday and Sunday mornings to watch my favourite team, Internazionale Milano. My favourite part about Italian soccer or 'calcio' is the atmosphere that a match generates: fans coming together enthusiastically cheering on this beloved game, and most importantly, the fact that regardless of any social beliefs, soccer players of different ethnicities can play together in the beautiful game of calcio.  But what I witnessed today, puts in sharp relief a reality that contradicts this. On September 1st, 2019, in a match between FC Inter Milan and Cagliari Calcio, the black Belgian striker Romelu Lukaku was awarded a penalty during which he became victim to racial abuse including monkey chants and derogatory slurs in Italian, chanted by Cagliari fans. Unfortunately, this is not the first case of racial abuse towards black Serie A players. Earlier this year, Moise Kean of FC Juventus was racially taunted during a game against Cagliari Calcio when he also received monkey chants from Cagliari fans. Sadly, the list goes on. In 2018 alone, Kalidou Koulibaly of SSC Napoli and Blaise Matuidi of FC Juventus were victims of racial abuse from fans of Inter Milan and Cagliari Calcio respectively. And a year earlier, in 2017, Sulley Muntari of Delfino Pescara was racially abused by Cagliari fans. It is truly disgusting and shameful to know that the Italian Football League has only given 'slap on the wrist' fines and in some cases done nothing to reprimand the teams at fault but more importantly protect its players.

Here attached is the video of Romulu Lukaku being racially taunted during a match against Cagliari Calcio.
