Help Prevent U.S. Child Marriage

When people think of child marriage, they often think of power distances in Middle Eastern countries. However, it is a growing problem within the U.S. Over 248,000 children had been married in the United States between 2000 and 2010, mostly to adult men. Some states have enacted bills to prevent child marriage, such as Maryland, New York, New Jersey, and Virginia. Even with these bills, they do not apply for an emancipated minor, or minor with parental permission. 91% of the children were married to adults, often at ages or with age differences that could have triggered statutory-rape charges, not a marriage license. This issue is pressing and we desire more legislative efforts among multiple states. Children need to have more legal rights as their own person.
