Girl Scouts of USA: Make Sugar-Free Cookies
We are a Girl Scout family, including two scouts, ages 6 and 8, and a scout-supporting mom. My daughters and I are asking the Girl Scouts to offer a sugar-free cookie so my son and their brother Derek, who has diabetes, can be part of the family commitment to Girl Scouts.
We were so excited to become a Girl Scout family this year, when Hailey and Olivia joined their first troop, and even more excited when cookie season came around. But the girls were devastated when they realized that their 4-year-old brother Derek couldn’t enjoy the cookies with them, because he has diabetes.
Derek was diagnosed with diabetes in 2011. Since then, our family has worked hard to make sure he can have as normal a life as possible and enjoy childhood with his sisters. We all want him to be able to participate fully in family activities, including Girl Scout cookie season. When, my daughters asked how they could ask the Girl Scouts for a sugar-free cookie they could eat with Derek, we started this petition.
The Girl Scouts haven’t offered a sugar-free cookie since the 1990s, when they were discontinued due to low sales. But in the past two decades, food science has discovered several healthier, better tasting artificial sweeteners, and new ways to make low-sugar and sugar-free treats. And diabetes is on the rise, affecting more than 25 million Americans -- many more than in the 90s. It’s a different world than in the 90s, and the market for sugar-free cookies is bigger.
Please sign this petition if you think the Girl Scouts should offer a sugar-free cookie option for people with diabetes or anyone else leading a low-sugar life. Hailey, Olivia, and I thank you for your support.
