We are asking that The Girl Scouts uphold their mission statement and what they stand for. "Embracing individuality is our core value."
We would like them to update their food allergy and anaphylaxis training materials for their local council staff and volunteers. This updated training would include tips to ensure both safety and inclusion of girls wanting to participate in Girl Scout activities with their peers regardless of their disability.
There have been several public statements from unhappy girls and families who have reported that their local troop did not develop the Girl Scout activity so that it would include all Girl Scout troop members. This exclusion occurred because the troop did not implement modifications which would have allowed for the inclusive attendance of the child with life threatening food allergies. All Girl Scout troop members MUST be allowed to safely attend the events regardless of their life threatening food allergy (anaphylaxis).
It is important for the Girl Scouts, adult role models, and peers involved in the Girl Scouts to demonstrate compassion and understanding by implementing modifications for planned events so that all girls can be treated equally.
