R.E. Deno started this petition to Gimp.org and

While the name of this program has been in use for around 25 years, now is the time to recognize that it's simply not appropriate, and is hurtful to the differently abled.  The GNU (originally "General") Image Manipulation Program is not a real name, but rather a contrived backronym designed to come up with a pre-chosen abbreviation - that is "The Gimp".

While we believe that the use of this, an ableist slur against the differently able, was not intended in a malicious way.  However, it is still harmful and should be changed.  The initial programers, due to the culture of the time, were likely ignorant of the harm being done, but with increasing awareness comes an increasing responsibility to change our ways.

As such, we are calling upon the developers of the project to change its name to one that is not a hurtful slur.  We understand that harm was not intended, but harm is being done, and we must all be aware of how our actions influence and affect those around us.  And we have a responsibility to adjust our actions, and not using a slur that attacks marginalized individuals is literally the least we can do to that end.

You wouldn't call it the N***er, the C***t, or the F****t.  Now is the time to stop calling it the Gimp.
