Sound & Safety Barrier for City of Holbrook & Holtsville. Build a sound & safety barrier on Nicolls Road, South of Long Island Expressway & Furrows Road.

A sound and safety barrier was supposed to be reviewed and further evaluated by Mr. Levy. However,  it was never conducted and our concerns were dismissed.

The population in Suffolk County has grown tremendously, as have the amount of vehicles traveling on Nicolls Road each day. The sound and lack of safety on Singingwood Drive, Springmeadow Drive, Skylark Drive, Greenbelt Parkway & surrounding streets, poses a great concern.

This is important to the residents of our community  for the following reasons:

-Safety: A narrow line of brush, a few trees, and a flimsy chain link fence (less than 4 feet in height in some areas and in varying stages of disrepair) serves as the only barrier between high speed traffic and children & pets.

-Some residents have an on-ramp just feet from their backyards.  It is not just a sound problem but a major safety concern. Many neighbors have children, some with special needs and with Nicholls Road basically in their backyard, it is a safety risk.

-In addition, the noise from Nicholls Road impacts daily activities. Level of noise coming from the traffic on Nicolls Road makes it difficult to carry on a conversation with friends or neighbor in the front and backyards, as well being able to hear children play (or cry out for help), sleeping, etc. Many of us can't even enjoy spending time in our backyards because of the constant sound of motorcyles and cars racing. It appears that no one patrols Nicolls Road because its a speedway.

-Recent scientific studies also correlate chronic noise exposure to higher incidence of Alzheimer's disease. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/m/pubmed/23899629/

-In a study by NOAA and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, "highway barriers erected along roadways to block the sound and sight of traffic for the adjoining neighborhoods may also be reducing the amount of pollutants, such as soot from diesel exhaust, reaching area residents."

A large body of research shows a variety of human health effects such as respiratory disease, cardiovascular illness, and cancer in individuals living or working near heavily trafficked roadways.

-Our back fences have been full of garbage that collects is atrocious because the city has neglected to maintain this area.

-This improvement would protect the residents of Holbrook & Holtsville with a safer neighborhood while also shielding them from the sights and sounds of Nicolls Road.

If you've been impacted by the lack of a sound & safety barrier wall, please contact government representative:
