Why this petition matters
Started by Concerned Cheer Parent
- GHSA is implementing a delay in season for competition cheer citing the risk due to indoor competitions and large crowds. However, other indoor fall sports such as volleyball do not have a delay in season even though there are the same number of athletes on the floor and shared equipment. Delaying the competition season directly impacts over 90% of the cheerleaders that make up these teams as they move from school cheer into All-star cheer season which begins in December. GHSA implementing this delay will risk losing athletes, teams, increase potential injuries from overworked athletes competing in multiple competitions/practices for at least two teams at the same time. Delaying into the All-star season also increases the risk of contamination or spreading of any virus because athletes will be traveling all over the country for their All-star teams and then returning to school competitions within days. The better option is to have the GHSA competition season during the normal season and limit the crowds allowed during each performance. The teams are already separated up until the time they perform and spectators can be limited to only watching their team perform. South Carolina and Florida have not delayed their seasons and the NFHS has not published a recommendation to delay competition cheer according to their website. Therefore, we urge you to revoke the delay and put the original time frame back to the fall.
