Help Musi Help Hyderabad
Hyderabad has only 1 river and the citizens and authorities discharge more than half a billion liters of untreated sewerage water into the Musi River every day. Help convince the governments to make strict laws against dumping sewage into the river and build more embankments to reduce the risk of floods during the monsoon season.
Throughout centuries civilizations have been built on riversides. It's an integral part of survival as it provides a drinking source and an effective area for irrigation. It’s an essential part of our lives without us knowing it.
Now the only river in Hyderabad is being polluted by us. And yet we are neglecting this issue. No one even thinks about where the drainage is being dumped, even the government is ignoring this problem. River Musi is turning into the sewage dump of Hyderabad.
The monsoon seasons in Hyderabad can have a lot of rain. This rain causes water bodies like the Musi river to overflow. It causes a lot of property damage as well as contaminates lots of crops. The massive amount of sewage dumped here has degraded the water quality so much that it has gotten rid of any marine life that previously occupied this river. Marine animals that we could previously see a few decades ago have become history. The river water is so contaminated that it's not even suitable for agriculture. So we don’t have a sustainable source of food or even drinking water.
The long-term solution to this problem is to stop the dumping of sewage and that can only be done if the government imposes strict laws against the dumping of sewage into river Musi. To stop the risk of floods we have to install embankments in critical areas of the river that are prone to floods. This is to keep the water flowing in the river.
The government is turning a blind eye to this very real problem. The condition of this river is not acceptable, we have to restore the river to what it once was, not only for our present but also our future. It is our responsibility as citizens of Hyderabad to protect our cultural heritage. So I urge you to sign this petition to help raise awareness about this issue to the GHMC and the government of Telangana.
