Getty says we used an image we did not on a website we had up for one month in 2008 for our wedding. We are not a company and never used their image. Tried to call and talk to them but they would not listen to anything I said

Getty tried to shake me down for hotlinking an image that I had not even hosted at my site. Moreover, the image was offered free for personal use by the photographer at her photoshelter site. Their staff do not even read the html of web pages to discover whether copying has even occurred before sending out letters to innocent non-infringers.

I own a web development company and over the past 6 years have had 4 of our clients contacted fromgettyimages.com "shake down" letters like this. In each case the clients provided their own photos from web searches, not realizing when they found an image they like on google.com, that those were copyrighted or required any licensing since said images did not have watermarks. In each case we helped the clients take down said images, and guided them in the purchase of new ones via other stock photo vendors, and had them report backto gettyimages.com, only to have them still continue to be extorted for ridiculous amounts of money. The fact of the matter is that gettyimages.com makes it sound like they hold the copyright licenses and that there already IS a case against you and that if youwant to avoid it going to court you must pay - however legally they have to send a NOTERIZED cease and desist letter first, allow you up to 30 days to remove said copyright material, and only IF you ignore them can the TRUE copyright holders file a legal case against you. It is a disgusting practice that gettyimages.com does, which there are literally hundreds of websites which share other consumer complaints about this, and some sites which give information about hiring a lawyer to submit a letter to get them to stop, report them, etc. DO YOUR RESEARCH as these tactics they use are very misleading and not ethical. They CANNOT force you to pay them if youremove the images in question and 9out of 10 times they only hold the LICENSING distribution rights, not the actual copyrights.

I have been victimized and so have thousands of other honest, small business people.
