Stop shaking down small businesses for alleged copyright infringement

Getty Images scours the internet for use of their images. When an image is found in use, the user is threatened with a cease and desist order and claim for an extraordinary amount of money, usually THOUSANDS of dollars for damages, unauthorized use and non-compliance with their licensing agreement. While entities that use images actively as part of their web sites, look or brand clearly benefit from such use, graphic artists who display their work only to demonstrate their skills in creating artwork for hire are not using such images to directly promote their company. If such a company complies and removes a cited image, they should NOT be charged a business-crushing sum of money for incidental use of an image that was acquired lawfully for its original purpose on behalf of the client who hired them. To say a company enjoyed profit from such use is dishonest and a blatant abuse of copyright law. Getty is using their resources to threaten and extract huge sums of money from small businesses who can't afford lawyers to defend them, misusing copyright law as a profit center.
