Currently, LSU is using the plus minus system in order to distinguish high levels and low levels of student performance. This makes an A+ a 4.3 and an A- a 3.7, B+ a 3.3 and a B- a 2.7, and so on. This plus minus system is not only useless but it is harming the students of LSU! Most post-bachelor programs ignore the plus minus system meaning that an A+ won’t be a game changer when applying to graduate school. Also, the plus/minus system is harmful to the students’ GPA. Getting an minus grade is a whole 0.3 difference than the regular letter grade. This can make quite a difference to the student’s cumulative GPA, which unlike plus/minus grades, is looked at by graduate schools. For example, an A- grade brings down the student’s overall GPA, even though it is still an A that deserves to be appreciated :(. I shouldn’t have a 3.9, preventing me from presidents list, all because I got an A- in a humanities class. That is not a true representation of my hard work. Getting rid of the plus/minus system will stop hurting students’ GPAs and will not effect graduate school applicants. I plan on sending this petition to the dean of LSU in hopes of getting the plus/minus scale to stop harming students’ GPAs. We should not be beating ourselves up over a minus.
