Jonathan Markham started this petition to Georgia State Senate

While many states offer generous subsidies and tax credits  to encourage electric vehicle ownership ($7,500 or more), Georgia offers nothing. Worse, it recently enacted an annual $200+/yr fee to owners of electric and non-polluting vehicles-- essentially a backward and environmentally regressive and punitive tax on those taking steps to reduce emissions in Georgia. It unnecessarily increases the cost of ownership of electric and other non-polluting vehicles by several thousand dollars over the life of those vehicles.

This punitive annual fee has had a dampening effect on electric vehicle sales in Georgia. Since Georgia's tax credit was phased out and this punitive annual fee was levied, annual electric vehicle sales in Georgia have plummeted by more than 80%. As a result, fewer electric cars are sold and operated in Georgia and more polluting cars are on our roads and in our neighborhoods.

While this annual fee helped obliterate electric vehicle sales in Georgia, the amount of money it raises for the state has a negligible effect on the State's overall budget. It raises less than $5 million per year in aggregate against a budget of over $26 billion dollars (less than 1/50th of 1% of state budget). It doesn't make a difference to the state. However, it makes a big difference to consumers, many of whom make purchasing decisions on the margins. The fee has had a disproportionate effect on reducing electric vehicle sales in the state of Georgia.

Georgia's punitive "alternative fuel vehicle fee" should be repealed immediately. The long term damage it causes Georgia's environment and citizens vastly outweighs the short term benefits it may accrue. Please help repeal this unnecessary and regressive fee. And please share with anyone you know who owns an electric vehicle or cares about air quality.
