Pass "Bou Bou's Law"

Last year, with flimsy, falsified evidence, police in Habersham County executed a “no-knock” drug raid on the wrong house -- where they severely injured, disfigured, and nearly killed a baby, Bou Bou Phonesavanh.
As a Georgia State Senator, I believe that our laws should be written to protect families from this kind of terrible tragedy. That’s why I have written Bou Bou’s Law, which will require that police demonstrate probable cause, not just a suspicion, that a no-knock warrant is necessary.
During the raid, one of these officers threw a “flashbang” stun grenade into the home, and it landed next to “Bou Bou” Phonesavanh, asleep in his crib. When the grenade exploded, 19-month-old Bou Bou’s nose was blown off, and the flesh on his chest was torn back to the bone. Bou Bou barely survived, and spent over a month in the hospital. He has permanent nerve damage in his face and chest, and scars that will never heal. Bou Bou will need to undergo regular surgeries into adulthood.
Despite the risks inherent in serving a no-knock warrant, the training requirements for officers taking part in raids like these are sorely lacking. If a no-knock warrant must be served, officers should know the safest, most responsible way to do so. Bou Bou's Law would require that members of police SWAT teams receive advanced training on how to serve a no-knock warrant, so that both police and innocent people will be safer.
Bou Bou’s Law has bipartisan support in the Georgia legislature, but we need to make sure it keeps its momentum. Please sign this petition to tell Georgia’s elected leaders that, for the safety of all of Georgia’s families, they should pass Bou Bou’s Law without delay.
