Why this petition matters

Started by Cecelia Carey-Snow

We hereby believe and affirm that,

  • The equestrian statue of John B. Gordon was erected in 1907, 42 years after the end of the Civil War and at the height of the Jim Crow era;
  • As a Confederate officer, Gordon served the cause of perpetuating the enslavement of Black Americans;
  • As Governor of Georgia, Gordon was instrumental in re-establishing and perpetuating the political and social culture of white supremacy and the oppression of Black citizens;
  • The primary purpose and effect of this statue was to celebrate and mythologize the white supremacist cause of the Confederacy;
  • The continuing presence of this statue on public property serves to negate and undermine the past and ongoing struggle to overcome and reverse the legacy of slavery and oppression of Black Americans

Therefore, we call for and fully support the removal of the statue of John B. Gordon from the Georgia statehouse grounds.
