Georgia Tech is reaching a new peak in COVID-19 cases, with the second highest number of cases reported on campus since August 2020. 485 students have tested positive since the beginning of the summer semester alone, and thousands have been exposed (GT COVID-19 Dashboard). Georgia overall has set a new high for COVID-19 cases and "in 10 of the state’s 14 hospital regions, more than 90% of ICU beds were in use on Wednesday, with two regions exceeding 100% of capacity." (For info see: https://www.ajc.com/news/coronavirus/as-covid-19-surge-continues-georgia-hospitals-running-out-of-icu-beds/LQN7LSZNU5H7TADFLCYDKNZ2R4/)

Even though other colleges on campus have instituted some virtual or hybrid options in response to the escalating infection risk, and despite having one of the lowest mask rates (40%), Scheller has mandated all individuals attend in-person class unless they are actively ill. This policy is completely unfair to students and professors who are otherwise making choices to stay COVID-safe, especially those that may be at a higher risk for serious illness. We have personally witnessed students panic in response to full classrooms, and older professors earnestly pleading for their attendees to wear masks (which are not required).

USG stated "that each campus is to maximize safe in-person instruction; ensure hybrid instruction includes a vast majority of in-person interactive instruction where appropriate and safe" (https://www.usg.edu/coronavirus In order to ensure this safety, of the mind and body of Scheller's students and professors, the individuals at risk must have a say in the mode of instruction.

We do not believe that virtual classes should be the only option for all classes. Some students (including myself) often prefer to be in-person, and we believe that should be their choice if the professor is comfortable offering it. But, in-person classes should not be the only options for students or professors, as this causes both unnecessary infection risk and harm to the mental well-being of some individuals. Virtual/hybrid options should be available to any professor or student who prefers that choice. Please sign in support of those who need these options, even if you prefer in-person instruction.
