Kalinda Hathorn started this petition to Georgia Department of Transportation

The concerned citizens of Appling, Georgia have come together and present this petition before you to ask for your consideration in improving the intersection at Washington Road and Ray Owens Road in our town. Though we are a rural community, we see a lot of traffic due to our distance from Augusta where a lot of people travel to for work. We also see a lot of traffic during the warmer months because we are located on the lake, which brings in a lot of people for water sports and leisure activities.

Kalinda Hathorn, the author of this petition, and her family have lived directly across from this intersection for nearly thirty years. Over the years, they have seen many wrecks at this intersection. These wrecks have ranged from people running the stop sign, to people passing those who are turning (it is a no passing zone), and even one that involved the death of a driver who ran straight through the intersection while intoxicated, hitting the tree in the Hathorn's front yard. The family also experiences drivers passing them while trying to turn in their driveway.

Kalinda: "Citizens of Appling have expressed concern about this intersection. Even though the number of motor vehicle accidents is not high when you consider the numbers in comparison to other "dangerous" roads, we still see people running the stop sign and passing vehicles every single day. I wish that was an understatement, but I can sit on my front porch with my family and watch it happen multiple times in a one hour period."

The signatures on this petition represent those people who are either citizens of Appling, work in Appling or come through Appling as commuters every day and wish to see a change. The most significant, and we feel the most logical decision would be to have a red flashing caution light installed at this intersection. Some citizens have also expressed interest in the intersection being squared off prior to the caution light being installed. There have been two stop signs installed there for some time now, but we are asking for the caution light to be installed above the stop signs so that it is visible to the drivers coming from Ray Owens Road.

We would also like to formally request that there be "no passing zone" signs installed on both the NB and SB sides of Washington Road approaching this intersection, there currently are none.

The concerned citizens of Appling would like to thank you for your consideration and prompt response to our request for assistance.
