Require Security Cards for Entry to Public Schools

With the increase in school shootings - 18 in 2018 as of February 15th - we need to strengthen school security and aim to prevent as much violence as possible instead of reacting to it. Entry to public schools is far too easy, and, while nobody wants heightened security, safety at school should be a student right.
I propose requiring magnetic key cards or showing a valid student ID for all entry to public school buildings as many private schools and universities already do. This is a fairly inexpensive, barely inconvenient yet highly effective security measure that will help keep everyone safer. Students, staff and approved volunteers would only have to show their ID or touch a magnetic security card to unlock the doors, allowing kids to check in and out with the same amount of ease as currently while making it harder for unapproved visitors to enter.
