The Georgia Department of Corrections fails to use their funding appropriately during this time of unknown. With a virus sweeping the nation, and killing hundreds of thousands, we have failed to consider the health of our incarcerated population. The cases of Covid-19 have skyrocketed in the jails and prisons. Everyday the inmates  are seeing their companions fall victim to the virus.

Frank Dey, 34 of the Coffee Correctional facility, experiences this first hand everyday. When he wakes up he is exposed. When he eats he is exposed. When he goes to sleep he is exposed. He and his fellow pod residents were separated from the masses no longer than three months ago. When suddenly there was a change, prisoners came in contact with more and more unnecessary people. Less than a week ago was he in direct contact with a known Covid-19 patient. Making his way to get his blood drawn, he would have never thought he would be in close proximity with an infected inmate. While he sat and waited for the nurses to begin his blood work, he could see the Covid patient through a hole in the wall connecting the two rooms. When he asked if he should be worried for his health, he was directed to wear his mask, made from a shirt, and to wash his hands. He questioned if the mask was even effective in protecting his life. His question was never answered.

Isolated from the World; Merged to its issues. While citizens have every option to protect themselves from the virus, prisoners are not as fortunate. The founding provided to aid in their fight for survival is spent on honey buns to silence their cries. Who are we to deny their rights to REAL masks and other essential, preventative products?
