Vonterry M. Bryant was sentenced to life in prison. But, for the past several years, he has been held in a unit where he is locked down 23 hours a day. He has been subject to beatings by guards, denial of visitations and the most inhumane deprivations. This is cruel and unusual punishment.
Even inmates serving a life sentence are still human beings. Mr. Bryant only wants to be treated like other inmates and be allowed in the general population. Sending him to the general population does not take a day away from his sentence. Prison is still prison. The walls are still there, the barbed wire is still there, the cells are still there. Mr. Bryant still has to do his time, but he should not have to be isolated, beaten and deprived of his humanity.
Mr. Bryant is not asking for special treatment. No extra commissary, no conjugal visits, no nothing. Just put him back in general population with the rest of the convicted felons.
