Apply HOPE GPA bump to current STEM students enrolled in Georgia Colleges & Universities

The much needed .5 GPA increase for selected STEM classes within the University System of Georgia provides a welcome stress and financial relief for students and parents of STEM students. However, the increase applies only to classes moving forward with the 2017-2018 academic year.
As a result, current students enrolled in STEM courses, who lost their HOPE or Zell Miller status, will continue to pay for their tuition out of pocket or through student loans, whereas incoming freshman who make the same grades as these current students will benefit from the .5 GPA bump and have a better opportunity to not lose their HOPE or Zell-Miller status.
As an example, without HOPE or Zell Miller, a current (Georgia Resident) Georgia Tech student pays tuition of $10,000 for two semesters. For a number of these students, if their 1st and 2nd year STEM class grades retroactively received the .5 GPA bump, they would still be eligible for either their HOPE or Zell Miller scholarship, a savings of potentially $10,000 a year if receiving Zell and of $5600 a year if receiving HOPE.
Note -- the .5 GPA bump applies to all students enrolled in STEM classes at all colleges and universities in the University System of Georgia. A .5 GPA bump is provided for all B, C, and D grades. See link at bottom of petition to learn more.
Bottom line, current students minimally benefit from the new .5 GPA bump and are in fact, penalized.
This petition requests that the .5 GPA bump be retroactively applied to all students currently enrolled in STEM classes within the University System of Georgia so that HOPE and Zell Miller scholarships are re-instated to these deserving students.
The need for the retroactive .5 GPA bump will self-eliminate over the next three years, as the current classes of students graduate from the University System of Georgia.
