Dillan Krichbaum started this petition to GW Campus Living and Residential Engagement The George Washington University

The George Washington University requires a six semester on campus Residency Requirement, meaning that students must live in a dorm for a total of at least 3 academic years. While DC schools are only required to have a residency requirement for first and second year students, GW makes it so students must reside in the dorms through their junior year.

Very recently, the University cancelled on campus instruction for almost all classes and students for the fall semester. They also cancelled housing contracts for students with housing and have offered a limited amount of housing to students who may opt to reapply. With housing cancelled and classes online, many students at GW have begun to evaluate their options to still live in DC during the Fall semester despite this.

However, GW's Campus Living and Residential Engagement recently clarified to various students considering these options via email that despite the extreme uncertainty of the global pandemic, the six semester Residency Requirement still completely stands. Despite cancelling housing for all students, they paradoxically advised students not to enter into a lease if there is a possibility of on-campus operations and housing resuming in the Spring 2021 semester. If this were to happen, it was said that the student would still be required to finish the six semester Residency Requirement, even in their senior year.

Many GW students are just finding out about this while in the process of entering into leases already, and are now left with much uncertainty. GW should not force students to make decisions about their living situation during a pandemic while also having to consider how these decisions will affect their time spent at GW in the future after the pandemic. Students should not have to worry about entering into a lease due to the possibility of requiring them to return to campus housing in the Spring.

The George Washington University must remove or shorten the six semester Residency Requirement policy for current students affected by the pandemic. These are uncertain times, and if students should decide to enter a lease that would cover the entire 2020-2021 school year, they should not be punished or affected should housing and campus reopen in Spring 2021.

Please sign this petition to tell GW that students are fed up with this unreasonable, unfair, and ridiculous rule that is affecting and complicating living situations for hundreds, perhaps thousands, of students.
