Recent events of hate and violence against the Asian American community that are exploding throughout America and in Westchester/the greater NYC area have left the Asian American community saddened, angry, and terrified for our elders, our children, and ourselves. Total, we number 59,000+ residents throughout the county, and even more who work in and support this vibrant community.

In early March, Nancy Toh was attacked and spit on in an unprovoked attack in White Plains. These acts of violence are representative of a deep undercurrent of hate against the APIA (Asian Pacific Islander American) community and requires active participation from our entire community to combat.

We acknowledge and appreciate the support that the Westchester County Government has provided through #SpeakUpWestchester and the resources for reporting hate or crime bias incidents, and the quick response of local police force to incidents such as the attack on Nancy Toh at the Westchester Mall earlier this month.

In addition to this, we implore you to support our community with proactive resources to protect our Asian American community members from future incidents. We call for the following:

  • Fund self-defense training for Westchester APIA residents so we can have basic tools for self protection in the event of an attack
  • Offer Bystander Intervention resources and training to the greater Westchester community so that residents and Westchester workers are able to support one another and potentially prevent future attacks to anyone in the community
  • Appoint at least 2 representatives of the Asian American community to the Police Reform/Bias task force to help implement resources such as translation/multilingual resources for hate crime and incident reporting
  • Continue community-wide programming to elevate and increase discourse on systematic racism and bias

The above resources will not only improve safety and quality of life for Asian Americans in Westchester, but all residents. Westchester’s greatest asset is our diversity and our values of inclusion. We are eager to move swiftly in creating these resources for all Westchester citizens and look forward to your response.
