Jayce's Complaint Denied on Heels of Religious Exemption; Call to Act

Janice "Jayce's Mom"
Portland, OR

Jul 11, 2014 — George Fox University has taken the path of Hobby Lobby and was recently granted a religious exemption from nondiscrimination laws as applied to transgender students. Shortly before Jayce filed his Title IX discrimination complaint, George Fox went behind his back and requested a religious exemption from Title IX's housing, restroom use and athletic regulations designed to protect students from sex and gender identity discrimination. The Department of Education recently granted that exemption request, and on the basis of the exemption, denied Jayce's complaint.

Jayce will appeal the Department of Education's ruling. In the meantime, Jayce needs your help. Please call George Fox President Robin Baker at 503-554-2101 and let him know how you feel about his discriminatory actions. If you don't feel comfortable calling, email him at: president@georgefox.edu.

By Daniel Borgen, PQ Monthly In April, we wrote about Jayce M., an African-American transgender student at George Fox who wants to live on campus with his friends next year, but was denied on-campus housing by the university. Jayce, a junior at the Christian university of liberal arts and sciences located in Newberg, Ore., has medically, socially, and legally transitioned.
