I am posting this petition of behalf of Mr. Grabher. I do not know him personally but feel strongly that he and his family deserve as much support as possible. Please do what you can to assist. Thank you. :)
My name is Lorne Grabher. I am 69 years old. I live in Dartmouth, NS. Growing up we were always taught to be proud of our family name and our heritage. This is the situation in which I find myself.
I was having coffee at Tim Hortons in December 2016 when my friends saw a woman taking a picture of my licence plate. I'm use to my name getting attention at times, so I didn’t think anything of it.
Then in December 2016 I received a letter from Nova Scotia Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal telling me that I couldn’t keep my plate that has my family name “GRABHER” because someone had complained. At first I thought it was a joke. Then I realized it was no joke.
“Please be advised that the Office of the Registrar of Motor Vehicles has received a complaint about your personalized plate GRABHER. While I recognize this plate was issued as your last name, the public cannot be expected to know this and can misinterpret it as a socially unacceptable slogan,” wrote Janice Harland, registrar of motor vehicles and director of road safety for the province.
I bought the personalized plate as a surprise for my father’s recreational vehicle for his 65th birthday. My father passed in 1991 at which time I gave the plate to my son. When my son moved to Alberta three years ago he gave the plate back to me. I was given signed permission by the province that I could put the plate on my vehicle. The personalized family licence plate has been in circulation with The Department of Motor Vehicle for 27 years.
GRABHER is my family name. It is NOT to be tarnished as a "socially unacceptable slogan". To say my surname could be misinterpret as "misogynistic and promotes violence against women" is discrimination! It's a slap in the face to say the very least.
To discontinue my personalized family plate of 27 years from circulation Janice Harland, along with the various officials I've tried to speak to within varying agencies from the Ombudsman, Human Rights Commission and my MLA, is stating and supporting this act of discrimination.
We can not control everything that "could" be misinterpret as politically incorrect, disgraceful or vile in nature by ONE individual or the public for that matter. Especially when it's about a family surname. It's one thing for this ONE complaint by a woman to have her point of view understood by another woman, the Registrar of Motor Vehicle, Janice Harlan. It's another to slander and discriminate against my family name by agreeing with this complainer.
The Registrar of Motor Vehicle, Janice Harland's professional stand on this matter could have and should have been to explain to the complainer that the licence plate is my surname. That my plate has been in circulation for 27 years without incident. That nothing would be done about her complaint. Simple as that.
My family name is NOT to be coupled with or tainted with such disgraceful and heinous slogans because of ONE individual's mindset. Janice Harland, Registrar of Motor Vehicles, could have and should have dealt with this ONE and ONLY complaint in 27 years more efficiently and professionally. PERIOD.
If this complainer wants to target undesirable slogans that are "misogynistic and promotes violence against women" or “socially unacceptable” I support that. Just leave my family’s surname out of it! There are plenty of retail corporations with their questionable slogans on tshirts and other paraphernalia that she can complain about. My family surname is NOT one of them! I do NOT support cruelty against woman or anyone... nor does my name!!
I'm not looking for any apologies. All I want is the privilege to honourably continue sporting my surname on my licence plate... as it has for the past 27 years.
Thank you for reading and for your support.
