Climate change remains one of the greatest issues of our time. Burning fossil fuels for energy releases carbon emissions into the atmosphere, which exacerbates this issue. Burning fuel for energy produces 45% of Canada's carbon emissions. Moreover, in Canada, oil and gas industries produce 0.3% of overall global greenhouse gas emissions. Currently, the federal government pays $3.3 billion annually to Canada's oil and gas industries. These subsidies contribute to climate change, and counteract Canada's plan to decrease carbon emissions by 2050. Instead, the government must start investing more of this money into carbon neutral sources of energy, such as nuclear fusion. Nuclear fusion forces hydrogen atoms together to generate helium, thus releasing massive amounts of clean energy. Nuclear fusion is an important development, as it will radically reduce dependence on fossil fuels. In turn, this may be a novel solution to reducing the effects of the climate crisis.

General Fusion is a Canadian company that is in the midst of developing a nuclear fusion reactor. Nonetheless, they require more funding to complete their research and development. If the federal government chooses to allocate additional money toward this company, then this may be enough to reduce our dependence on fossil fuels, as General Fusion may be able to develop enough nuclear fusion reactors for every province in Canada. Ultimately, if enough Canadians sign this petition, we may be able to encourage our government to invest in this technology once again, which may aid in reducing our carbon footprint.
