Bring our children back to the classroom

With the CDC now stating that in-person learning is low risk for students and teachers, and with the NC Governor and NC Superintendent urging all districts to offer an in-class option for learning, we ask that the Asheville City School district move to offer an in-class option for the families of our district.

We know that in person learning is the most effective way for our children to learn.  To not offer an in-person option for our families is inequitable, as it is our at-risk children that suffer the most.  Not every family has the option to stay home with their children, or provide transportation to take them to a different school, or pay for a private school.  These factors are causing the educational gap to grow even wider. These gaps will have a costly impact on the future of our children, as well as the future of our community.

Our children haven't been in a classroom since March 2020 and it has impacted our community greatly.  My own children have shown a decreased interest in learning, increased stress and frustration over the burdens of virtual learning, and shorter attention spans due to more screen time and less structure.  Mission Hospital has seen an increase of moms, children and teens in the ER with mental health concerns.   There have been numerous social media posts in Asheville groups of parents who have shared that they are at the end of their rope.  Some have expressed extreme financial hardship due to their inability to work because of the need to supervise their children's schooling. Our community is suffering.

We cannot allow our children's futures to be another victim of this pandemic, and we should not allow emotion to dictate our decisions.  Our children can go into a grocery store, a restaurant, and other places of business, but they have yet to be able to enter a classroom.  Our priorities seem out of order.  We need to trust the data, trust our state leadership and bring the children back in a safe and responsible manner.
