I am an alumnus of an HBCU Aviation program. Like many young women before me who joined the program hoping to become airline pilots, I began my studies with a concentration in 'Professional Pilot'.

The HBCU Aviation Program at this University was established in 1987 and has only been able to produce a handful of women pilots who have successfully completed the entire professional pilot curriculum.

Unfortunately, after one year on the professional pilot side of the program, I switched my concentrations due to constant gender inequality and mistreatment.

This petition is a platform to bring attention to the abuses, discriminatory practices, and gender inequality women face every day in flight schools and aviation programs across the united states. Abuses such as these are the foundation behind the gender disparities in commercial aviation and one of the reasons why the percentage of female commercial pilots is so low.
My story is not unique to just me, several other female pilots endured the abuses in the aviation program I attended as well.

Furthermore, it is disheartening to share that in my research, other aviation programs are consistently practicing these abuses as well.
As young women, we enter these Aviation programs/Flight Schools with one common goal: To complete them successfully. We come to have our skills harnessed and cultivated and we arrive with untainted hopes to eventually live out our dreams of adding to the 5.5% of women commercial airline pilots in the U.S.A. but we were met with gender inequality instead.

If you are a survivor of gender inequality or witnessed it during your time at an aviation program/Flight School, no matter the result, do not be silent.
