Why this petition matters

Started by Emerson DeHass

Many students, especially middle and high schoolers, struggle with mental health. Elected officials are just now starting to recognize that- in some states, mental health/personal days are allowed, just like sick days. I and many of my friends have had days where we are just feeling so down that we just can't bear to go into the school building, but we had to because, in Georgia, mental health days aren't recognized by schools. Especially now, with COVID-19 and virtual school, it's more stressful than ever, and many students are being affected by that. We students have so much on our shoulders and have so much information coming into our minds, that we need to be allowed to focus on our mental health and stay safe. Teenage suicide is a huge problem; in Georgia alone, an average of 120 or more teenagers commit suicide every year. In the big picture, 120 doesn't seem like much, but it is still 120 too many. You never know- maybe a mental health day for these teenagers could have saved their lives.
