The dress code announced on June 1, 2021 is sexist and discriminates against female students.  Rather then expecting the students to respond appropriately to their peers,  CWC District, specifically for GCMS,  has implemented an archaic dress code.  By absolving  students of any part or responsibility in how they perceive the female body, the dress code takes on the assumption that ‘boys will be boys’ – the belief that men are naturally more impulsive in acting on their desires, hence, it is up to the ladies to save them the trouble. This reasoning is not at all innocent.  Additionally, where will a  female students  find clothes that meet these arbitrary requirements?  It is 2021!  Students are hostage to clothing manufacturers and the current fashion trends, none of which conform to the new dress code.  Stand with the students!  Stop sexualizing students!    The current dress code penalizes female sexuality, making it the girls’ responsibility to cater to "supposedly uncontrollable desires and impulses, which further propagates the phenomenon of rape culture".

Below is the new dress code:

"Dear GCMS Families:

Now that the weather is nice and the summer is getting closer, we continue to see more and more issues with students dressing inappropriately. Due to the fall and us being mostly remote, there was no need to address this sooner. Our current guidelines in the GCMS Student Handbook are vague, so I felt the need to clarify some of the dress code expectations. These will be clearly explained further in next year's student handbook, but for the remainder of the 21-22 school year, please abide by the following:

Pants, Skirts, Shorts, and Dresses:

● All dresses, skirts, shorts, and skirts must be below fingertips when the arm is held straight down along the side of the body.

● Leggings may be worn under skirts, but skirts must still fall into the above category.

● Large holes in clothing will not be allowed.

● Undergarments must not be visible.

● Pants should sit high enough on the waist so that they do not expose underwear when a student is sitting, walking, or bending down.

Shirts, Tops, and Dresses:

The following are NOT allowed:

● Tank tops

● Halter tops

● Tops that are off-the-shoulders

● Bare back tops

● See-through tops

● Additionally, none of the above should be worn in combination with the other. (e.g. off-the-shoulder top with a tank top).

● The midriff must be covered at all times. A shirt must be able to be tucked in completely when arms are raised.

● No undergarments (male or female) can be worn as outer garments.

● Tops that allow undergarments to be seen are not allowed.

● Necklines will be measured by placing the palm of the student's hand across the bottom of their own collar bone. The neckline cannot fall below the bottom of the student’s hand. Any shirt or blouse that exposes cleavage is unacceptable at the middle school.

If a violation is made, we will do our best to accommodate by providing clothes for the student to change into, but we do not have much extra clothing available, so most likely, you would receive a phone call to come and drop off clothing for your child to change into.

With only 15 school days left, we hope to make it through without many of these issues, but please read carefully and know what our dress code expectations are for the remainder of the school year and into the 21-22 school year."  End quote.
