GCCISD Board of Trustees: Don't Change High School Schedules
This petition had 1,091 supporters
For the past 50 years in Baytown, our student and family routines have revolved around high school schedules. The traditional 7 to 3 high school timing has dictated family dynamics, parent and student work times, and student participation in extracurricular activities.
The schedules of high schools in Baytown have been integral to the pace of this city. However, the GCCISD Board of Trustees is now threatening this long-held and delicate balance between our high school students and the community. The GCCISD Board of Trustees has recently proposed changing the current high school schedule to a delayed school day starting at approximately 9 a.m. and ending at about 4:30 p.m.
While this time change seems to offer a plethora of advantages, it simply provides too few benefits and results in far too many drawbacks. The change in time will displace established sleep and lifestyle rhythms, interfere with students’ jobs, hinder students from providing care to their younger siblings, and cause major logistical and economic issues.
Yet, all is not set in stone; the decision is still pending. Each signature on this petition is a step towards overturning GCCISD’s plan for a new time schedule. As the members of this community - the students, parents, and educators of Baytown - we have the responsibility of preserving and bettering our future and well-being.
