Did you know that every minute there are 1 million plastic water bottles sold globally? These bottles have a huge effect on the environment in many ways. These single use bottles end up in landfills as well as the ocean, where they take hundreds of years to break down, slowly releasing toxic chemicals that disrupt natural environments and contaminate our natural groundwater. On top of the bottles being harmful to the environment, the water that is used in the bottles is usually unsustainably sourced and taken from places that rely on that water to live. Water bottle companies take water from areas all over the world, buying up the wells that could give water to hundreds, even thousands, of people forcing them to turn to either unsanitary, polluted water or forcing them to buy bottled water that was stolen from them. The water these companies take changes the hydrologic cycle of an area, which leaves them with water shortages and as a result, higher water rates for the citizens living there. Georgian Bay District Secondary School needs to stop supporting the bottled water industry. It should not be a commodity for us to buy, especially since there are fountains all around the school that give everyone access to clean drinking water for free.

Thank you for your support,

Devon Sponagle
