Has anybody making the decisions about the return to schools ever actually set foot in one? I understand some are parents (as we are so often reminded in your oh so wonderfully worded speeches), but do your children attend a school like the one I (and many others) are being told to send my children back to or face fines if I don’t? On the one hand we are being told how we face a second wave of COVID-19 during winter, potentially far worse than the first, and though easing slowly, restrictions are still very much a part of day to day life. In the next breath, we see articles declaring all schools will be back with full size classes by September, and that’s that!

I work in a primary school... does or has anyone making the decisions ever worked in a school? Because your “bubbles” WILL NOT WORK with full size classes... and this has nothing to do with the lack of wanting or effort put in by the dedicated or willing members of staff.

My older 3 (BAME) children (who you’ve told me are potentially at higher risk??!) attend Secondary school (not that they have been since March) in a neighbouring village, travelling on public buses (also used by the community to get to and from work) that, frankly, resemble a scene of sardines in a tin... to arrive at a school of well over 1000 children and staff. How will this travel work? What are your plans for this? I don’t drive so can’t get my children to their school without the buses. Secondary school children also move around classes in sets for every lesson. How will this work with bubbles? Surely even the teachers won’t be able to go from bubble to bubble, let alone the 200+ kids in each year group?
My youngest child has autism... has anyone of the decision makers thought about our SEN children in mainstream schools and the bubble life for them though? How about asking people who work in your schools? How about listening to parent‘s concerns after you’ve spread nothing but fear, firstly about COVID-19, then about a loss of their children’s education? Instead of trying to play “catch up,” would it not be far better dealt with if the entire (outdated) curriculum and eduction system were the things to be looked at and changed; instead of focussing on a way in which we can get children back into school regardless of the risks or potential problems? Let’s be honest, you’re far more motivated and concerned by the economic issues we, as a country, are faced with, than the safety and well-being (mental health as well as risk of infection) of our children... or their actual education. As for staff that work in your schools... It’s been a “suck it up and get on with it” approach from the start. Try talking to your Head teachers, teachers, support staff, cleaners (do you know how often the cleaners are now in school?). I know you have allowed the public to think that school staff have been doing very little over the last 14 weeks, but please start correcting that misinformed and highly insulting view. I know the papers keep posting these lovely pictures of the bubbles in place in primary schools... Yes the children who have been in school are happy, well looked after and enjoying being back (despite the stringent new rules and hand washing and differences to their usual routine), but that is with -15 in a bubble, which is half your usual average class size! Who is paying for EVERY child to have their own separate stationary pack like they have now? How will the toilet allocation in school work? How are we fitting full capacity classes into your “bubble” environment classrooms? Please, PLEASE, step foot into a school and SHOW us!
Despite what you continue to allow people to believe, schools have NEVER actually closed. Some of us have been there the whole time AND had to work from home on other days, AND had to home-school our own children, AND be forced into making difficult decisions about our own families in the process (my older 3 children are actually my child care for my youngest child whilst I go to work). We have still turned up at work smiling, supporting the children who are in school everyday & those who are at home, doing our job to the best of our ability with the (scarcely straightforward) guidance we have been given. I WANT my children back in school, everyone WANTS their children back in school. Those of us who work in school WANT ALL OF OUR PUPILS BACK IN SCHOOL... But I still can’t make the 3 train, 2 bus journey to go visit and stay with my family this Summer... if I do, I’m not allowed to hug my Mum and Nan who I haven’t seen in all this time... your MP’s still won’t sit in a “full“ House of Parliament... but I can work in a school of 300+ and send my kids on public transport to a building of 1000+ people in a couple of months time?! Forgive me my confusion, some STRAIGHT and LOGICAL steps forward would be much appreciated.
