We the undersigned note that the increasing talk of ending the lockdown involves getting children back to school in order for working people to be able to return to their workplaces.

We are deeply concerned that moves to open schools to anymore children before it is safe to do so will lead to many more deaths within our communities and whilst this is a risk for everyone, in particular it places many BAME families at a higher risk.

The largest teacher’s union, the NEU, is opposed to any changes to the current position on schools and points out the impossibility of social distancing within schools. The science is not clear and there is a chance of infection being spread within the school, pupils and educational workers and then across families.

All children deserve equal access to education that is being provided whilst schools continue to be closed to all but key workers and vulnerable children. If any child is not able to access this due to lack of computer and internet, then they should be provided with this immediately.

The level of poverty amongst many families is deepening due to redundancies and the economic crisis. Whilst opposing schools going back to normal, we demand that no child or family should be left without the support they need to mitigate from the effects of the virus on the economy. If massive firms such as Tesco can be given huge sums, (and pay dividends to its shareholders), then working people should receive the support they require. Homes in poverty need support but we must not rush children back to school until it is safe to do so.
