During the pandemic, many young people across the UK have left their homes to start what was meant to be an exciting new beginning. Instead, a lot of students have been left to live 10 weeks of uncertainty, confusion, and ultimately disappointment as to why things aren't how they should be.
Personally, as a student writing this, I have experienced all of these 3 feelings first-hand and this is why I am starting a petition to gain the outcome students deserve. It began as students were told they were being put first, in order for a safe and successful study resulting in online learning. Here we were told we would be able to learn at the same rate as we would on campus. Unfortunately this has not been the case as many people are often met with the daily challenges of actually finding their lectures, having an internet connection strong enough to withstand these long calls which contain large parties, going from one call to another in order to do group work and overall the longness of technical difficulties which are really not helpful whilst trying to work and focus.
In addition to this, students have been made to stay isolated from other "accommodation bubbles". We are given the ability to mix with our own bubble however how can it possibly be fair for the university to determine who we are to make friends with. The result of this is that students feel more alone than ever as they're not able to make those connections with people and make those key friends we all need for when our families aren't with us. For many students that have moved cities, starting university would seem daunting enough as it is, despite knowing that you have a selection of maybe 6 other people you could be friends with, no idea how long that will last, the ability to only move from kitchen to bedroom to laundry room. Universities have also largely failed to support students mentally during this time, as people can see in the news, but also just by the lack of awareness for how students are really feeling.
Alongside this the government have encouraged repatriation advice. Many of us are leaving or have left university at the start of December and not returning until the end of January and are still required to pay accommodation fees.
We are repeatedly reaching out to our course leaders, university management teams and even the government and we are not being heard. We have been encouraged to contractually commit to accommodation and course fees that in no way reflect the standard of teaching or duration of residence we were told at the outset. The level of disappointment, frustration and isolation we have all experienced and the impact it has had on our mental health can no longer be neglected. Whilst we appreciate the whole world is suffering as a consequence of this pandemic, in the UK there has been substantial support for many.
By signing this petition, you are supporting university students with a financial contribution from the government to reflect the poor learning environment and accommodation fees that students have incurred during the pandemic. Please support us in ensuring the government debates fairly, the impact that COVID-19 has had on students learning and financial commitment/debt so that it is commensurate with the investment that we have all made to further our education.
