Special needs children, especially autistic children, need to go to school for their mental and physical well-being. Staying at home for prolonged period of times not only disrupts their routine which causes enormous distress, especially if they are not verbal and don't understand what's happening, but also causes lack of the mental stimulation they need to feel happy and be able to regulate their emotions for the rest of the day and night. School breaks are dreaded by their families because they often mean sleep deprivation, constant battles and efforts to keep the children calm and happy, verbal and physical abuse by the children as they get increasingly frustrated and angry. This has a huge impact on all family members and can lead to serious consequences. There are too many and too long school holidays in the UK and this is extremely unfair on children with special needs and their families. Teachers of children with special needs should be the first to understand this as they can barely cope with the children at school just for a few hours a day and just for 5 days a week, the families instead have a 24/7 all year round full time job! The complete lack of support during the holidays is shocking which is why school must reduce the length and number of their breaks. There's absolutely no need for a 3 week break during Easter for example, especially after all the absences due to Covid.
