Whilst the world is adapting to the effects of the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, one area which has failed to change and adapt to this new reality is the standard to which University students are held accountable to. The situation regarding University grade boundaries has remained stagnant despite vast changes in teaching and learning. Despite having almost zero contact hours and having to self-teach courses, students are still having to produce excellent pieces of work to achieve top grades.

Simple things such as getting books from the library or discussing ideas with your fellow course mates are now nearly impossible. Although Universities have tried to remedy this by using break-out rooms via Zoom, most students feel that this does not work, particularly if you have never even met the people you are supposed to be working with.

Additionally in the 2019-2020 academic year a benchmark grade system was introduced to protect students from suffering from the effects of their hindered learning. Although this was a great initiative, there is nothing currently in place to protect students despite having to deal with the same hardships.

The fact of the matter remains that whilst the quality of learning has significantly dropped, expectations on students remain the same.

We propose a new tiered grading system which would keep the pass mark at 40%, however make it easier for students to achieve higher grades. Please see blow for the proposed new tiered grading system for undergraduate and postgraduate degrees.

Undergraduate:

Pass - 40%

2:2 - 45%

2:1 - 55%

1st - 65%

Postgraduate:

Pass - 50%

Merit - 55%

Distinction - 65%
