The government have cancelled GCSE and A-level exams for all students in 2021. However, a significant number of students in the United Kingdom are still due to sit IGCSE exams this year. This year's exam cohort had to contend with lockdown from March until the end of the summer term in 2020 and have begun the spring term in 2021 in facing similar restrictions. Where schools affected have been able to provide remote learning, not all students have been able to access this provision consistently, due to disparities in Wifi coverage. Even for students who have stable access, learning online is not an adequate substitute for in-person learning.

The families of these students have had a rough ride. Many have been emotionally, psychologically and financially impacted by the effects of the pandemic. Given the high number of fatalities throughout the pandemic, many will have lost a beloved family member. While students may not suffer from the worst effects of Covid-19 themselves, they continue to live with the threat that this disease will affect those close to them. Many students will be living in households experiencing unprecedented anxiety and uncertainty.

The disruption to learning experienced by GCSE and A-level students is replicated among IGCSE students. Therefore, it is imperative that all students be given the same consideration. Please instruct the awarding bodies to cancel the 2021 IGCSE and to give these students the opportunity to receive teacher awarded grades in place of public examinations.
