Pierce Joint Unified Educators Association started this petition to Pierce Joint Unified School District Board of Trustees

If you agree that teachers should have the choice of teaching (Distance Learning) from home or from school, please add your name to this letter.  The letter will be sent to the PJUSD Board of Trustees and made public at the board meeting on Monday, August 3rd at 6:30 pm. Anyone living within the school district can sign the letter below.

Dear Pierce Joint Unified School District Board of Trustees and the Members of the Communities served by our District,

On July 17, the state announced that schools located in counties on the COVID-19 watchlist, including Colusa County, would start this school year with Distance Learning to stop the spread of COVID-19.  Our local teachers and families are concerned that the school district is requiring teachers to teach distance learning only from their classrooms.

We believe our students deserve safety and stability in our schools. To ensure this, Pierce Joint Unified Educators Association demands professional choice for teachers to work from school or work from our homes during distance learning. The district decision does not allow all teachers the choice to work from home or from school weakens safety and stability in our schools.

Many staff members have health and safety concerns for themselves and for the members of their households, and want the choice to work from home or from school, until our schools are allowed to reopen for students. It is especially concerning that the district has not allowed the public to play a meaningful part in creating a safety plan for school. In fact, no updated written plans for on-campus safety have been released for us to review, yet teachers are still required to return.

The current plan does not permit teachers to supervise their own children in their classrooms. The district is asking teachers to put their TK-12th grade children into a day care provided at the last minute by the district, without a safety plan being released. They would not provide care for children younger than TK. Teachers should be allowed to work from home like millions of Americans, allowing their children to be safe.

Teachers have worked very hard to support our students throughout the COVID crisis, and are committed to continuing this work as we begin the school year with distance learning. If we are able to teach students while working remotely, we should be allowed to do so.  As professionals, teachers must be given the individual choice to make the decision to work from the location that will best serve our students and them.

As a group, the Pierce Joint Unified Educators Association, along with supportive families and community members, urge PJUSD to prioritize the safety and stability of our students’ learning environments by allowing teachers the choice to work from home or from school while teaching distance learning.

Sincerely,
