Retraction of Governor Reckless Coronavirus Statement on Nail Salon

On Thursday May 7th, Governor Gavin Newsom of California stated that the source of the community spread of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) in California began in a nail salon, without any facts, details, or evidence to support this claim.
A baseless statement of this magnitude, continues the xenophobic attack on minority communities, especially Asian American Pacific Islanders. Many nail-salons are owned by minorities and people of color, first generation immigrants, and are women-owned and led. The careless words of the governor will undoubtedly create fear among our communities resulting in declined customers and much needed economic relief when this pandemic passes, exacerbating an already tense and economic hardship burdening the nail salon industry. In addition, the workforce within the nail salon industry are primarily women, immigrants and refugees, and in some instances, the primary breadwinner of their households.
We urge Governor Gavin Newsom to retract this arbitrary and harmful statement, or provide a follow-up statement supporting this baseless claim.
We love our country, we love our state, and we love providing the highest quality of nail service to our customers in a healthy, safe, and welcoming environment.
