Alyssa Diaz started this petition to Governor Gavin Newsom and

Proposal:

According to California State law AB 341, all multifamily residents that produce at least five units of solid waste per week must have recycling services in place. Recycling services are also required for businesses, public entities, and commercial buildings that produce at least four yards of commercial solid waste per week. Although, requiring recycling services is a good start to help our environment, we can do better. I propose that all multifamily residents that produce five units or more and all businesses that produce four yards or more must have a compost service in place. I believe we can truly generate great environmental outcomes if the state of California added compost service requirements to this law.

Why composting is important:

The United States Environmental Protection Agency states that about twenty-four percent of the waste we throw away can be composted. Without the addition of compost services this twenty-four percent of trash is going to landfills. As we already know the waste that sits in a landfill contributes to the decline of our environment, due to its generation of greenhouse gasses. According to the U.S. EPA, wasted food and yard trimmings can be composted and used to benefit the environment. Not only would composting services benefit the environment by reducing the number of potential greenhouse gasses. Composting also destroys industrial volatile organic chemicals (cleaning contaminated air), helps aid all types of reforestation, and can even be used to promote agricultural crops. The list of environmental benefits from composting goes on and on. Although this proposal only affects multifamily residents and businesses I do believe it is a necessary first step to helping our environment. Due to the large amount of benefits from composting I believe composting services should be a requirement in the state of California.
