Reopen California is a group of California citizens concerned about the impact of mass shutdowns and school closures in response to COVID-19. We acknowledge the situation caused by COVID-19 and appreciate that it is a public health concern. However, the economic, social and educational disruption caused by shutdowns is guaranteed to, and has majorly caused significant harm, leading to increased deaths, economic disruption, loss of livelihood, and educational challenges for Californians and their families, and far less disruptive means of managing the disease can be employed, not to mention that this is a major civil rights issue. Civil rights are a class of rights that protect individuals' freedom from infringement by governments, social organizations, and private individuals. They ensure one's entitlement to participate in the civil and political life of society and the statewithout discrimination or repression.
This is a human rights/civil rights issue denying us and restricting every person of race, gender, and disabilities, rights and using the word “safety” and “covid-19”, to take away our god given rights such as our First Amendment. For example : “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.” As you do not have grounds to implement emergency orders as that has expired months ago I URGE you, Gavin Newsom, to not continue to illegally keep California shut down.
The first amendment means no city, state, or federal authorities have the right to dictate what we can do unless a law is made, including but not limited to, small businesses and individual rights.
Civil rights include the ensuring of peoples' physical and mental integrity, life, and safety; and our rights should not be restricted due to safety concerns alone. They also include protection from discrimination on grounds such as race, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, color, age, political affiliation, ethnicity, religion, and disability; and individual rights such as privacy and the freedom of thought, speech, religion, press, assembly, and movement.
We are petitioning our governor, Gavin Newsom, and State Representatives to immediately reopen our state's business, educational and religious institutions. Californians are struggling daily to pay bills, maintain family unity, ensure their and their children's, well-being, and remain connected. Research has demonstrated that non-economically disruptive physical distancing measures can be sufficient to control the spread of COVID-19, and we call upon Governor Newsom and our State Representatives to hear constituents and immediately begin the responsible reopening of our state and ending violation of our civil rights.
