Lucia Gonzalez started this petition to Governor Gavin Newsom

We, the residents of Santa Ana in Orange County and our allies, call on Gov. Gavin Newsom to keep Orange County beaches closed until the state deems it is safe to open them. On March 19th, the Governor ordered a statewide lockdown on all non-essential businesses and activities to flatten the curve and keep Californians safe. After less than 7 weeks in quarantine, Huntington Beach protestors took to the streets to defy the Governor’s executive order, putting the county’s health at risk.

According to the Orange County Register, as many as 3,000 people joined the crowd last Friday and no citations or arrests were made. Beach city residents are blatantly defying an executive order and are not being reprimanded, making this a clear example of white and class privilege. Some of the signs read “Heil Newsom”, “COVID-19: A test run at socialism”, and “COVID-19 is a lie.” Later that day, Orange County reported 163 new cases “marking the highest daily total so far.”

Huntington Beach protestors are putting Orange County at greater risk for a higher infection rate while Santa Ana and other minority cities are vulnerable. With limited access to healthcare and a high population of essential workers, Santa Ana has the highest rate of infection with 405 total cases to date. This is not even considering the fact that Santa Ana residents have less access to testing, meaning the disparities are far worse.

The protestors have shifted the blame stating that those who do not want to be infected can just stay inside, but these protests are not isolated. We still have to go to the grocery store and pharmacies. Their actions will spread the virus faster in the county.

We will pay the ultimate price for their irresponsibility. We hope that the Governor continues to push for Orange County beach closures, for our safety and for the protestors'.
