My name is Marco Perez and I have served 14 years of a 25 years to Life Sentence for murder and attempted murder. Three weeks after I turned 14 years old, two lives were taken and one was severely injured which, I am deeply remorseful for and I take full responsibility for my actions. This is something I will live with for the rest of my life.
 
Over the last 14 years I have matured and made many improvements to become a better person. I gave up the gang lifestyle and made education and rehabilitation a priority. In juvenile hall I earned my high school diploma, and I am currently earning my Associates degree through Palo Verde College.
 
In addition to my educational achievements, I have been involved in many voluntary programs. I was part of (PAWS) Pups and Wards, a dog training program where I trained shelter dogs. I have also been involved in book publishing projects such as “MAN, I WISH I WOULD HAVE KNOWN” and youth diversion programs where I participated in numerous tours with foster and at-risk youth by sharing my experiences. Furthermore, I have completed nearly every self-help class available throughout my incarceration.

Since becoming incarcerated I have maintained family support and become a man of God. I play an active role and bring value in the lives of my family, friends, and to the community. I need to be in their lives as much as they need me in theirs.
 
Please allow me to show that I am no longer the 14-year-old gang member I use to be, but instead a 28-year-old adult who has gained insight, responsibility, and remorse. I have family to come home to, employment waiting, and the support of family and friends. If given the opportunity I believe the Governor and the Parole Board will see how I’ve turned my life around to become the man I am today.
