Lacy foland started this petition to Gavin Newsom

Junipero Serra was a Roman Catholic Spanish Priest who was responsible for the premature deaths and culture suppression of native Californians. He did not just bring Christianity to the native peoples. He imposed it. Serra built the first nine California missions. And while many Californians like to romanticize the missions, they were not beautiful places of peace and glory. They were essentially concentration camps. Their everlasting legacy is death, not grace. And it is well past time we stopped having major streets, schools, and landmarks named for the men who perpetrated these atrocities. I think it is only right to rename Junipero Serra Blvd to First People's Avenue in a small attempt to acknowledge that what Serra and the rest of the mission priests did to the native people's of my beautiful state was abhorrent and unforgivable.
